The stronger this spark the higher the chance of the promotion and the greater the level of support from your boss for the future work you do. Here are seven tips to nurture that spark.

  1. Assumptions. Write down all the reasons you think you should be given the promotion in one column. Seperate these out in to those your boss would give and those you would give. In a seperate column write down all the reasons you should not be given the job. Seperate out as before. Sift through and look at the assumptions that do not help you. Now ask what is an alternative but equally true assumption you can make? Use it.
  2. Context. What is the context of the role you wish to be promoted to? If you understand the context well enough and operate within that context you will be put you ahead of those who are not.
  3. Values. Write down the five most important values you want to live by. Do all of these values match with the role you want to fulfill? The more values you want to live by are matched with the role you want to fulfill the more likely are you to be offered the position.
  4. Goals. Write down the goals you have for work. Check them against what you could do in the new position. The greater the match the greater the prospect of you being considered for the role.
  5. Story of You. Does the story you tell yourself about you match up well with the story of the promotion role? If the two fit well together you will have a great chance of being considered and offered the role.
  6. Commitment. Are you committed to the new role if it is given to you? Commitment shows through in all sorts of visible ways to other people. If you are truly committed your chances are increased.
  7. Confidence. How confident are you of being able to do the new job well? Confidence also transmits in many ways and any shortage will show up. If you are genuinely confident you have a great chance.

Get all 7 of these tips working in your favour and the job is yours. Be honest in your assessment though and look for how you can make more of them work for you. Personal honesty is an overriding tip which if applied with these 7 tips will get that promotion offered to you.
