10 Building Blocks For Strong Companies in Challenging Times
Hard moments are inevitable in business. Different economic environments bring different challenges that companies and business have to grapple with. There are several external factors that can become challenges to an organization. Some of those challenges threaten the continual existence of the organization. Challenging times vary in terms of their scope and magnitude with some being individual company challenges while other challenges are national by nature (affecting every company in the country) such as laws and policies passed by government. There are challenges however that are global by nature. Nearly every nation faced the Global Economic Crisis which was felt by every nation across the globe resulting in massive job cuts, repossessions of property by financial institutions to name a few scenarios. The tremor of challenges will be cushioned if you build your business with intentionality making sure that you are putting foundations and pillars that will defend the business when the storms do come. Leaders have an important part to play in putting this bricks and pillars together. Employees have an equal responsibility to participate in the implementation of some of these safeguards. It is a combined effort, everyone must put their effort.

Every leader knows that leadership is not an eternal and permanent assignment. There will come a time when the mantle of leadership will go to the next person. You can either be replaced in your death, your resignation, your promotion, your demotion or when you retire to go and rest. Whichever way you look at it, succession is an important subject in business and social life. Whichever way you are replaced, you need to be a leader who is prepared when the time comes. You should never panic on your death bed concerning who is taking over your company. You should never panic on your resignation how much you fear that all you have built over the years will crumble to the ground. If ever your fears are true then avoid shifting the blame to any other place outside you. You are responsible as a leader to intentionally develop a pool of potential successors under you. That is the reason for mentorship. I have a mentor that he dedicated his life to research and teaching on mentorship. I can only give you the link to Nurturing Champions Blog, the home of mentorship. Still the question remains, how do you select a mentor? Is it according to public demand and democratic ways or you appoint as your wisdom and knowledge of the people you were grooming is more than everyone else who could be guessing based on wrong considerations or attributes. I strongly believe that since you are the visionary, it is your role to appoint one who you entrust to take your legacy further than leave the mobs to jostle, campaign and throw daggers at each other silently in a rage of competition. It is more orderly that way.
Read More10 Practical Staff Motivation Options
With my 15 years of corporate exposure both as an employee and employer, I have grown to understand the value that comes from staff members when they are motivated. Whenever this term used to be mentioned, all I would start thinking of was that people wanted more money and more money. I had the mindset that it was hard to motivate an employee because my premise or foundation on the subject was based on a definition of motivation that was skewed towards a fraction of what motivation really is. A basic definition of motivation is the reason(s) behind someone’s actions or behavior. Sometimes the reasons are within the person, inside them (intrinsic motivation) while in a number of cases it is a result of what is done to the person (extrinsic motivation). A lot of theories exist behind the subject of motivation. One such theory I have grown to understand it the Maslow’s hierarchy of needs which shows the basic motivator as being the need for food and shelter going all the way up in a pyramid to other issues such as self actualization. Some theories do not close the pyramid to signify that you can never arrive at a place where you have full motivated someone. In this article I am giving you practical tools that work.
